The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent honors show approaches, one notices an outcry for the addition of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of followers with niche passions.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category that year
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
  • Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the hard edge of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
